There is / There are


In the English language there are several expression which sometime we don’t know where they come from such as “there is” and “there are” but in this case we will learn that they are the conjugation of the verb There Be and they are going to indicate existence about something that we are referring to there are two ways to identify and learn them as it follows considering also the three ways that we already know
Ways to apply

  • There is         singular (hay)
  • There are      plural (hay)

Affirmative way

  • There is + complement in singular
  • There are + complement in plural

Negative way

  • There isn’t + complement in singular
  • There aren’t+ complement in plural

Interrogative way

  • Is there + complement in singular +?
  • Are there + complement in plural+?

Examples:

  • There is a cathedral in the downtown of the city
  • There are a lot of people in the parade
  • There isn’t a good restaurant near here
  • There aren’t foreign students in the class

Examples

A: Is there a big pet in your house?
B: Yes, there is /No, there isn’t
A: Are there 20 computers in this classroom?
B: Yes, there are / No, there aren’t
A: Is there a TV here?
B: Yes, there is / No, there isn’t
A: Are there flowers on the garden?
B: Yes, there are / No, there aren’t
